Some patients simply just want a record of what their skin was like at a certain point in time, for future comparison with new or changing lesions. Mole mapping is an important tool in the early detection of skin cancers, when combined with a  skin check . There are various methods of mole mapping. Dr Andrew Thant uses the Dermengine platform  via total body photography . This involves taking photographs of your skin from the front, back and sides using OptimaLight.  Mole-Map technology automatically detects your moles on a body part image and maps them to your 3D Body Map. Mole-Match technology compares your moles to see if they have changed or if any new moles have appeared. Mole mapping has detected the appearance of a new mole. How to book: Total body mappi...

Surveillance photography is normally done 3 months after your skin check to see if any of the suspicious lesions have changed. You can also book a spot check if you have a few spots of concern that you want professional advice on - however, a full skin cancer check is generally recommended over a spot check.  Cost: Spot Check = $85 . Your Medicare rebate is $39. How to book: Feel free to book online with Dr Andrew Thant or Dr Mae Tun, who have further training in skin cancers and dermoscopy.   Please note that a spot check is different from a  skin check  or  mole mapping .  Our skin cancer clinic is located in Chevron Island (Surfers Paradise). Melanoma

Melanoma is a deadly skin cancer that arises from uncontrolled growth of melanocytes. It is the third most common skin cancer in Australia. Non cancerous growth of melanocytes leads to moles and freckles. Cancerous growth of melanocytes results in melanoma. 50 to 70% of melanoma arise "denovo" - meaning it appears as a new mole. 30 to 50% of melanoma arise from existing moles. Melanomas present in many different shapes, sizes and colors. That is why it is difficult to provide a comprehensive set of warning signs. The first sign of a melanoma is most often an unusual looking freckle or mole. Melanoma is usually curable when detected and treated early. Dermoscopy during a full skin check is an important tool for the early detection of melanoma. Mole mapping provides a photographic record of the location and size of your moles on the skin surface at that particular point in time. This allows for a comparison your moles in the future to see if they have changed in size or if any ...

BCC - Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer. These skin cancers arise from the basal layer of the skin and occur due to uncontrolled growth of the basal cells secondary to DNA damage - with UV radiation being the main cause. BCCs can appear as open sores, red patches (often mistake for eczema or dermatitis), pink growths, or shiny bumps that may look like pimples. At times, BCCs may ooze, crust, itch or bleed. They can be distinguished from normal sores as BCCs do not usually heal. On dermoscopy, they often have arborizing blood vessels that are visible. BCCs commonly arise in sun-exposed areas of the body such as the face, chest and arms. The mainstay of treatment of BCCs is with excision of the lesion. If very superficial, topical treatments may be used. When left untreated, BCCs can become disfiguring and possibly dangerous. Although they grow slowly and are not as dangerous as SCCs or melanoma , they will invade locally - growing wider and deeper. First into the fatt...

SCC - Squamous Cell Cancer

Squamous Cell Carcinomas (SCCs) are the second most common type of skin cancer. They arise from the top layer of the skin and are more aggressive than BCCs . SCCs can appear as scaly red patches, open sores, rough skin, or raised growths. They can be itchy, crusty or bleeding. SCCs can look vastly different on separate people. SCCs often grow quickly, so must be dealt with timely. If left untreated, they can invade through the fatty layer of the skin and into muscle, vessels and bone. SCCs grow and invade normal tissue much faster than BCCs. This is why they should be excised as soon as possible. Large SCC on the left shin. 3 months after excision of the SCC. A triangular scar can be seen where the SCC once was, as a "V to Y flap" was done to close the wound. Dr Andrew Thant is a skin cancer doctor at Chevron Advanced Medical & Skin Cancer Clinic . Book your skin check online or give us a call on 07 5538 8811.
